Six health benefits of mushrooms

Six health benefits of mushrooms

Mushrooms are a non-negotiable staple in my life. I’m not necessarily talking about the magical kind here, but rather the myriad varieties available for consumption in all different forms. Not only are they jammed with healthy vitamins, minerals and nutrients, they are super diverse, delicious and widely praised for their extensive health benefits. I could go on and on about all things mushroom, but instead I’ll focus on a simple six. (But just know, there are heaps more!)

Nutritional benefits

All types of edible mushrooms contain varying amounts of protein and fibre, as well as B vitamins. Many are high in antioxidants and some varieties, like white button mushrooms, are one of the few non-animal sources of vitamin D. (If you happen to be vegetarian or vegan, spend a lot of time indoors or have a darker complexion, you may have a higher chance of vitamin D deficiency and can benefit from adding more mushies to your diet.)

Cancer-fighting properties

Research indicates that some mushroom varieties have the potential to protect against cancer. They do this by protecting cells against DNA damage and inhibiting tumour formation. Reishi mushrooms in particular have been the subject of many studies relating to cancer development and chemotherapy, as well as immunity benefits. Shitake mushrooms can aid in the slowing and spread of leukemia cells, thanks to their high lentinan content, while white button mushies have been shown to reduce PSA levels in patients with prostate cancer.

Cognitive health

Research also indicates mushrooms’ positive effects on cognitive health and their benefits in treating and managing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. I love lion’s mane for its memory and focus-enhancing properties, as well as its mood elevating benefits. It’s rich in beta-glucans, which are responsible for important psychological activities including neural growth.

Immune support

Mushies are also high in selenium, which helps support the immune system and prevent cellular and tissue damage. Turkey tail contains the bioactive component polysaccharopeptide, which is also frequently thought to regulate the immune system. While some mushrooms can be eaten raw, certain cooking methods like grilling or microwaving significantly increases their immune-supporting, antioxidant activity. White button, shitake, oyster and king oyster mushrooms retain more of their vitamins and nutrients when exposed to shorter cooking times.

Heart health

Mushrooms are also known for their therapeutic properties that can help lower cholesterol in overweight adults. In addition, phytonutrients found in mushrooms can aid in the prevention of cells sticking to blood vessel walls and creating plaque build-up. This helps in the maintenance of healthy blood pressure and circulation.

Metabolism boost

As mentioned, some varieties contain high amounts of vitamin B. Chanterelles are one of the most concentrated source of B vitamins - including B12 - found in nature. B vitamins are imperative for converting food into energy and keeping the nervous system in check. Plus due to their high fibre content, mushrooms of all kinds help to promote healthy digestion.

Sleep support

Good quality sleep is essential for our overall health and wellbeing. Yet so many people don’t get enough of it. Lion’s Mane offers natural benefits to improve mood and sleep disorders, and is also said to enhance dreams. Reishi mushrooms are also known for their beneficial effects on sleep and relaxation, and have been shown to have hypnotic and sedative type effects for some.

This really is just the tip of the iceberg! So whether you enjoy them raw, grilled, fried, baked or in smoothies, shakes, juices or brownies, just be sure to get your fill of these glorious wonder foods!
